Of course, players may reinterpret, misinterpret, or otherwise try to get out of an unpleasant situation without ever issuing a challenge. For example, John might establish that he had the reputation of having a drug problem even though he never actually had one, or Mary might establish that Edna is quite weak and doesn't hit hard. This kind of maneuvering, however, can never entirely negate the original statement. Only a challenge can do that!

Technomancer Press Launches Player-generated Content: A New Concept in Gaming

Penny Arcade has announced the launch of TerraDrive, a science-fiction themed game that crosses formerly immutable gaming boundaries: online and real-life play, in a collaborative publishing environment; players will play online as well as in real life and will develop their gaming environment in collaboration with Technomancer Press.

Technomancer Press is achieving this by sponsoring a convention-wide game at PAX: The Penny Arcade Exposition in Seattle, this August, called TerraDrive Live. Players will identify each other by the "life tokens" they wear in their convention badge holders, then challenge each other to combat, attempting to win their opponents' tokens. Combat will be conducted through a version of rock-paper-scissors modified by cards that enhance attacks or offer protection. A list of the top players and factions will be posted on the last day of the convention. Following PAX, players will be able to play TerraDrive, the tabletop roleplaying game, set in the same universe they played in at PAX. While the real-life portion launches at PAX and the home game launches after PAX, play begins now as players develop the TerraDrive Universe, on a wiki at www.technomancer-press.com/TerraDrive/. They will develop planets, alien civilizations, ships, factions, and whatever else they want. They will band together in factions themselves, creating histories for themselves. In turn, Technomancer Press will write content for TerraDrive (the tabletop version) using the content the players have created.

"An RPG setting that players develop and a publishing company professionally prints and distributes has never been done before," says Tony Hellmann, CEO of Technomancer Press. "It was inspired by a curious phenomenon called The Elemenstor Saga, which is a wiki set in an alternate-reality that Penny Arcade hosts. It began with a single page, and fans logged in and created a world with so much detail, that you can get an episode summary of a TV program that aired July 5, 1996 in Japan."

Technomancer Press, with Penny Arcade’s help, are taking the concept one step further, with a fan developed wiki whose content fans will actually see in print. Technomancer Press will monitor the wiki carefully to determine “thematic player demands,” as they call them. “If we see a lot of crime syndicate development, we’ll write a crime syndicate adventure. If someone creates a space influenza that so interests other players that they start writing it into their own narratives, it will probably show up in a TerraDrive adventure as well. We want to publish what players want to see, and there has never been such a clear way to know that.”

TerraDrive Live begins at PAX 2007; every attendee will receive a copy of the rules and a life token. TerraDrive (the RPG core rulebook) and its first two TerraDrive Universe adventures go on sale at PAX on Sunday, August 26 and hit hobby game store shelves the next day.

I think a show-wide game is a great idea, and jumped at the chance to host TerraDrive Live when Tony presented it,” says Mike Fehlauer, business manager for Penny Arcade, Inc. “PAX attendees are going to get a chance to make history when this game debuts, and we're giving Technomancer Press the support they need to make TerraDrive Live a success.”
